What reading has taught me:

I can look at a moth stuck in a lamp and despair at the insignificance of life.

Zero benefits except for entertainment and the ability to stop worrying about looking like a pleb if someone asks whether you've read famous book X.

Non fiction can benefit you sometimes but only in a way that opens your mind, not fills it with facts

It opens me up to new worlds and different perspectives whilst providing entertainment.

Once you've read enough you can constantly reference characters and authors in every day conversation. Like this guy.

Reading is probably more beneficial, in general, than what you would be doing with your time otherwise.

Google 'benefits of reading'

As far as I can see, reading is shown to have highly positive consequences and a successful correlation, directly or indirectly with a bunch of important matters (e.g. the school grades, the obesity rate, and so on). From my own experience, I've been reading since I was just a child and I consistently felt ease over my classmates. I have a much wider vocabulary, I speak three foreign languages in a natural tone and have no trouble getting what's going on. It also let me acquire a solid culture which significantly weakens the social barriers. Overall, I'm a better person. The most important point is that reading is a time-consuming activity that prevents you from engaging in less fruitful ones, like watching the television, spending half the day on YouTube or playing video games. When you read, you are literally not doing anything else, and vice versa.
