Because it's the kind of fake deep that's really good at convincing plebs it's deep. Salinger is the ultimate writer stereotype: depressed, reclusive, etc. True of his work and his own biography. This is a great way to convince people that you're a good writer: just be so writer-y that people trick themselves into liking you.
