It's time for a thread about the greatest writer who ever lived.

Sound and the Fury is his best novel, in my opinion.

Absalom, Absalom! is the patrician's choice.

Hi there!

Faulkner, like Shakespeare, is best appreciated by those who can pick up the rhythm of the writing. So much of the beauty is in the cadence developed.

If I were to rank his works among the books I've read, my top five would probably be:

1) Absalom, Absalom!
2) The Sound and the Fury
3) The Unvanquished
4) The Mansion
5) As I Lay Dying

Definitely agree, it was the novel where he was at his narrative and creative peak for me. The Sound and the Fury was equally great, but everything coalesced beautifully in Absalom, Absalom! It's probably my favorite novel of all time.

so: greatest writer + his best novel

does that mean the sound and the fury is the greatest novel in your opinion?

I don't think that's necessarily true. You could be the greatest writer based on the fact that you have written 1,000 great novels, but still not have written the single greatest novel, whereas the author of the greatest novel might not be the greatest writer of all time, because they may have only written the one novel.
