okay /lit/, help me out. name me three things that society cannot function without.

so far I'm going with law, Knowledge,Power... but power really seems out of place. Do you have any better ideas? I want to personify these as characters in a poem I'm writing

Think about this OP...how is "law" different than "knowledge of the law"?

Anyway, I would say a source of food, shared language(s), and some form of shared culture.

our society or any society op?

What about people? You'd probably need some people.

Equality. Society breaks down once equality is gone. It's threatened a lot by racism and the like nowadays, but financial equality still keeps things in balance. You see, people have to trade in equal amounts, even worthless pieces of paper or coins, otherwise they feel a debt is paid.

Imagine a society where they hadn't invented trade. There isn't one. People trade with items and animals they find to be of equal importance, but money is the big one that everyone just loves to have and hates to lose.

Bullshit. Society breaks down when you start giving people who don't deserve it political power. For example, our society has been getting steadily less stable ever since women got the vote.

1. Charisma. (Wow, the Leader sure is impressive, I think I'll side with his faction.)

2. Intimidation. (I'm siding with him because I like having all my fingers.)

3. External enemy to define itself against. (You must accept all of the Leader's plans, otherwise the Enemy will win! Why do you hate Ruritania?)

OP here, just a few clarifications:

I'm just looking for the basics of human society, in particular premordial/early society. In regards to having one of the factors as being "the people", I'm ignoring that because I have the protagonist represening that.

Anyhow, good ideas. Keep on posting!

Morality, commonly accepted ideology (which is why anarchy would theoretically work with enough people believing in it, but people are too scared, hence the rush to authority figures), a surplus of resources so people are living above mere survival.

People can always consume more than they produce. Always.

Why?
>>Never gonna happen.
What's democracy then? And I don't mean a unanimously held ideology.
>>People can always consume more than they produce. Always.
That is not physically possible. There needs to be a net total of resources larger than the consumed resources by default for survival.

Food, Communication, and Shelter. These are all essential to the survival of people.
