>It's cool to say how good this is
>It's also cool to say it's terrible and that people only like it to seem cool
Isn't this exactly the feedback loop DFW was trying to warn us of?

>> No.7826904

Fuck the haters, in my opinion.

>> No.7826926

I just think it's terrible and generally never voice that opinion.

>> No.7826929

Am I supposed to read that fucking 8 page filmography?

>> No.7826933

The footnotes were pointless. He could have cut 600+ pages and still said the same thing.

it's pretty funny/clever if you give it a shot

I read it. I liked it. I think its indulgence and prose style are supported by its central message. I consider DFW an excellent technician, but his ideologies were very juvenile and, if his suicide is anything to go by, obviously not capable of sustaining an individual's life.

The footnotes were an integral part of the prose and style. skipping them would be like skipping a random paragraph.

Yes, you have to realize that it's not some over-indulgent aside but actually part of the story itself. It's just an endnote to not break the train of thought of the passage it's a part of.

I didn't skip them. I just felt like there was so much that was unnecessary, it was a waste of time. It was still a good book but it would be better if it was shorter.

I don't think he killed himself because of his ideology, anon...

I'm saying I believe the reverence people pay to him in regards to his ethical espousals seen throughout IJ and elsewhere (I'd say primarily his interviews) are misplaced. Look at how a majority of his fanbase speak of him and you'll notice the sort of idol-worship afforded to icons. A lot of that support seems to stem from a belief in his concern with morality, goodness, and the other facets of 'How to Live s Good Life.' For a clear example of DFW's of depth in that field, read the opening paragraph of The Pale King. It reads like something posted on Facebook.

I maintain that he was a highly intelligent and gifted technical writer, but that a good portion of his reputation is built up around a belief in his moral stature, of which he was lacking.

Just my two pennies. I have nothing against him personally. I just didn't find him as deep or penetrating a thinker as some proclaim. He was, however, a very engaging and influential stylist, and I'm completely okay with that.
