I remember not subvocalizing as a child, but then the fucking teachers at school made me do all of my readings by reading out loud and now I can't help but subvocalize. Fuck them.

No for real though if I'm reading alone at home I often read passages out loud. Imo it's just the best way to savour the prose.

I only don't subvocalise if I'm reading the news or something for work or whatever.

Good writing deserves subvocalisation at the very least.
