I'd love to name some, but I can hear the pretentious douchebags of /lit/ massing in the shadows to pounce on any unsuspecting fantasy enthusiasts that decide to participate.

You're right, but fuck it.

WTF is "literate" fantasy?

>> No.779072

Fantasy, by its very definition, cannot have literary merit. All of it, without exception, is poorly written, pulpily plotted drivel written by manchildren who cannot write serious, epiphanic literary fiction like the likes of Joyce, Dostoyevky etc.

Only a plebian would need to ask a question like that.

>> No.779164

All fantasy novels are literate in the fact they have been written.

Also, Terry Pratchett, Neil Gaiman, the works. Jim Butcher is also a god damned master of urban fantasy.

Which, really, is part of the appeal to fantasy. A whole 'nother world to explore.

This. Although Prince of Nothing is just the first part of a larger series called The Second Apocalypse.

Very interesting read though. Whereas ASoIaF is a personal, sympathy invoking story, The Second Apocalypse is more of an epic saga that happened in some ancient place.

>> No.779211

Most of Borges' fiction, OP. Though it's not high fantasy, if that's what you're looking for.

>> No.779220

As much as I love Fantasy and Terry Pratchett, I think it needs reminding that Terry himself has admitted he doesn't write literature. He was knighted for his services to it by "Not writing any".
