Hey do you guys in america read Coupland? the guy who coined the term generation x? He's a pretty good writer... funny, indepth, down to earth. I like him. just wondering if you guys heard of him?

Microserfs is excellent. Bunch of twentysomething nerds in the early 1990s slowly get a life.

Shampoo Planet is good too. The character is sort of the last gasp of the 80s--he's fixated on brand names and hair-care products and such, like Patrick Bateman without the serial killer part.

Life After God is weird and sad, and good. Short and disjointed. Generation X is really overrated; his other books do the same thing better.

Canadafag here.

I had to read Generation X for an English class independent study in Grade 12. I couldn't stand it. 192 pages of "YUPPIES ARE BAD, FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS, BE FREE, ESCAPE NORMS". It was so boring. But then again I'm 19, so maybe it sort of missed its mark.

I read it when I was 19 and I liked it. But then, I was 19 in 1992, so maybe it's a generational thing...

>> No.779337

I only read Life after God, which I liked. Planning to read Generation A next

>> No.779342

Generation X - okay
Life After God - really good
All Families Are Psychotic - shit

>> No.779364

>>779342
Shampoo Planet wasn't bad, either.

>> No.779663

Yeah, I read almost everything he wrote. (not in America though). Microserfs and J-Pod are my favourite, I think. Though I also enjoyed the Gum thief and All families are psychotic. And eh.. all his other books too, basically. The books become a bit sameish after the third or fourth you read, but in this case, it doesn't bother me.

>> No.779677

jpod was hillarious

>> No.779692

I've read and liked Microserfs & Jpod. But he didn't actually coin the term "Generation X", he popularized it as a term for that particular generation. Wikipedia is your friend.

>> No.779696

I understand there was a tv series based on JPod... was it any good?
