Hi /lit/ nonreader here trying to into reading.

Is it justifiable to not want to read fiction?

What are good books for starting getting into reading?

But for serious, here's a mediocre starter kit.

Infinite Jest is the only book you need to bother reading.

Try "The Stranger". It's well written but easy to read.

I became an avid reader like three months ago and I can't stop. I stopped watching tv and I don't spend much time on 4chan anymore.

Here's how I did it.

-Remember the average person reads like zero books a year. If you read 5 pages a day, you are 5 pages above the average person

-Don't force yourself to read. Commit to read 5 pages a day. I swear after three days you'll feel like reading more and after a month or so you should be reading 50-100 pages a day for pleasure

-Read various books at the same time. When I grab a difficult book or one that makes me sleepy I grab another and switch. This should refresh your head. Keep them thematically different. I read economics and fiction.

-It isn't a race. Reading slowly won't make you sleepy that fast. Try to acknowledge what books are for you to read fast and which aren't.

-Buy the physical copies. When you get the books from your own money you'll feel the need to read them to avoid the feel of wasting your money.

-Start with books highly discussed here so you feel motivated to discuss.

A couple stupid questions:

> Lolita
Is this legitimately good literature or is it only included because of le 4chan meme lolis?

> Fear & Loathing
Is this still culturally relevant enough to read? I thought the entire novel was basically a reflection on the fallout of the then-recently-failed hippie movement

> Huckleberry Finn
After having heard about this book my whole life it seems extremely boring and non-challenging. Young boundless kid experiences freedom and gets into hijinks in an old-timey town whee. Is this really worth reading?

> American Psycho, The Great Gatsby, The Catcher in the Rye, To Kill a Mockingbird
I am ashamed to admit that I watched the movie/read the plot synopsis before I read the book. Does reading the books after having them spoiled cause them to lose their effect?

I haven't read it, but it's there for it's literary qualities.

>Q1
Lolita's author Vladimir Nabokov is one of the best prose stylists period. The book is not even graphic. It's a well loved classic all across the board.
>Q2
F&L ... is it relevant? Very little of what you read will be directly relevant to you. It's a great book but you're pretty close to right on what it's about (only you forgot the tear-assing road trip part) so if you're uninterested skip it.
>Q3
What you're describing sounds more like Tom Sawyer. Huck Finn has a lot more literary merit, but again, if you're not interested skip it. I think Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn are both masterpieces worth reading.
>Q4
No it doesn't.

>lolita

It's a pretty fucking good read, not a meme book at all. It's like reading pages and pages of really well written poetry. I haven't read anything else by Nabokov but it's honestly a work of art

>Huckleberry Finn

I haven't read it but I had the same mentality when it came to read The Jungle Book. I ended up loving the jungle book and it was more of a "Challenge" than I was expecting.

>To Kill a Mockingbird

Possible, depends on person. I watched 2 seasons of GoT before I read ASOIAF and I loved the series when reading it. Literature is a different form of media so it's a different experience even if you know the outcome.

>Lolita
I've started it, but couldn't finish, because I just borrowed it and had to return. I found the book legit literature.

> Fear & Loathing
I've seen the movie, based on that, I think it worth reading, I'll do so in the near future.

> Huckleberry Finn
I haven't read it. As I figured, it's a classic book for children and only relevant if you're reading it in your youth and you're an American. If you're not, then you've most likely already read some similar book relevant in you country.

>American Psycho
Book is a lot better than the movie, if you liked the movie, you'll definitely like the book, despite that it may seem a bit unnecessarily long.

>The Great Gatsby
I read the book first, then I watched the movie with DiCaprio. The movie, at least for me, was a vivid and interesting illustration of the book. I think it worth reading even after the movie, at least you'll see the events in a different light.

>The Catcher in the Rye
I've read it, but I didn't really liked it. There are better book concerning similar themes.

>To Kill a Mockingbird
I haven't read it yet, but I'm planning to do so. About spoilers: they never bothered me at all. I started watching Game of Thrones after my brother told me that there's a new series in which Sean Beandies

recommended reading: God Knows by Heller, good book, even for beginners like you. It should be in the starter kit instead of Catch-22.
