I'm a dilettante but as a layman's intro I enjoyed Guy Deutscher's The Unfolding of Language.

I'm getting ready to head to classes soon. If you just go to the archives and control f search for Chomsky you'll find it no problem. If you can't find it after trying let me know and I'll link it if the thread is still up and running.

I like linguistics outside of sociolinguistics. That shit was revolting to study.

I go to a decent uni but, wow, do I feel for our linguistics majors

Linguistics For Dummies (written by academics and pretty much goes through everything you need for a comprehensive introduction), anything by Chomsky, anything by Saussure and anything by Derrida. Pinker is okay, not the best though. You should go on university presses and look at anything relating to linguistics.

Sociolinguistics can be cool tho. I guess you live/study in the US, right? Here in central Europe it is a pretty interesting subject since there are a lot of minorities in most countries who have different native languages, so there are actual sociolinguistic issues to talk about (e.g. preserving minorities languages, developing their vocabularies, bilingual education, etc), not shit like pronouns.

Just starting to get into it, but conlanging books are interesting even if not particularly informative. Plus you can pick up a new hobby if you really get into it.

What is wrong with sociolinguistics? It's just linguistics with a dash of sociology.
Also, what the fuck?

Disclaimer: Not OP

>Taco bell is Racist
I don't know for sure, but I think it means converting all Mexican cuisine to the taco in name.
>do away with pronouns
Probably stems from discussions of the evils of grammatical gender and the "new" ideas of human gender as a personalized identity where everyone can have their own pronouns (First we had he/him and she/her, now er have xe/xer, xe/xim, and even such things as bun/buns/bunself). Some might argue that we do away with he notion of the pronoun in favor of "Sally looked in Sally's pockets to see if Sally could find any of Sally's loose change." or something equally terrible.
>everything is a construct
This might be about the idea that language shapes one's perception of the world and vice versa, the whole conversation that started Lojban.

Linguistics is too broad a field. Is there anything specific you are looking for? Pop-sci, or academic?
