What does lit think of akutagawa? im not, ot rather i never could into, fiction but recently tried some of his stories and im enjoying them.

and what about japanese lit in general? also read a couple of overviews and im feeling like this is my way into fiction.

Akira Kurosawa liked him enough to make a movie from his 2 short stories.

My favorite work of Akutagawa would be Kappa, however.

As a rule, I try to remain neutral when it comes to foreign authors.

So much can be lost in the translation process, however good the translator.

Hell, even the works of Tolstoy/Dostoevsky/etc are said to be pretty lacking compared to their native Russian versions; and that's a lot closer to English than Japanese.

well i think that is a given... i mean, you sound as if you were still expecting the translation to be fully faithful to the original. for me it is a given that i am getting an interpretation in the musical sense of the word.
