No spoilers, please.

I recently picked up the first two Discworld novels, since I've heard good things of them. What should I expect before I delve into them?

And upon looking at Wikipedia, I see there are 38 novels. What the hell, man.

Rincewind first

Yeah, I got Colour of Magic and Light Fantastic, so I guess I'm doing that.

>> No.772378

The first two are good, but personally I think they get better as you progress in the series. apart from the last few books, which were just 'meh' to me. Expect hilarity and clever jokes, I guess.

Yeah, I'm not sure I'd start with Rincewind... I think the Guards series is the best place to start and go from there.

I'm reading the series in order. I'll be starting the third book soon.

Don't do the mistake of watching the cartoons/movies until after you've read the books....

>> No.772538

I thought the first 2 books were pretty average. Rincewind's adventures get ALOT better as they progress though. Read the later books.

OP should just read them all. The early books are short and quick to read and they setup the whole world for later novels.

The cartoons were how I was first introduced to the series. Ausfags might remember when they showed it on ABC.

I think they were VERY good adaptations.

I found the cartoons kind of confusing, though I've never revisited them. The books, however, I have always liked. Especially the Rincewind series.

Guards! Guards!
Motherfuckers

>> No.772652

Personally I like the Watchmen mini-series the best normally, but I'd still definitely reading them in the order they were written. It's really nice how the world develops and fleshes out as Pratchett clarifies it in his head, and if you read them out of order you miss things.

OP: They're clever, but not in an intellectual way, which is good because that's not what they're meant to be, they're just good fun. Expect to love them.

Rincewind Saga.
Guards Saga.

They get better and better

>> No.772660

Before I had read the books I had no idea what was going on in those cartoons really.

And for the love of god don't remind me about afternoon ABC, especially after Howard slashed the budget and stacked the board with his cronies. It's just a depressing array of flash-animated Canadian crap now, and this is not merely the effect of rose-coloured glasses either. No wonder the next generation are practically retarded.

What to expect? Hilarity, witticisms, parody, action and adventure. And the Luggage. Beware the Luggage.

>> No.773055

Pratchett is only considered good being compared to other fantasy authors. He's still derided in literary circles.

>> No.773090

>>773055
Who gives a shit, Pratchett's books are not supposed to be high literature. Just enjoy them for what they are.

>> No.773100

Pratchett has never claimed to write literature, he actively avoids the comparison, but he was knighted for literature at the same time. So uh, yeah.

>> No.773115

Knighted for services to literature. He said this was because "he refrained from writing any"

They are the worst books in the series.

Meaning that if you like them everything that comes after will be god-tier.

God damn it, sounds like something... a TROLL would say.
