Does /lit/ have a favorite publisher?

Penguin, because it is simple and has a cute penguin.

In Tokyo, one of the railway companies' mascot thing is a penguin, I'm a sucker for cute penguins. Even China's 'QQ' uses a penguin.

Picture related, it's everywhere in Tokyo.

Signet Classics for paperback. Everyman's Library for Hardbacks.

Penguin Classics and Norton Criticals for older literature, Gollancz and Night Shade Books for genre fiction.

I'm not a hipster fag or anything, but I love the independent publishing houses because they are a lot less concerned with churning out the same stuff to make money (though they're still concerned with making money). Soft Skull Press, Graywolf Press, and Twelve are three of my favorites.

El Ateneo and Gredos. Argentine and Spanish publishers respectively, non-anglo here.

Vintage, particularly the ones with the red spines and really fantastic covers. (see very shitty quality pic)

But Penguin for cheap classics :)

Wordsworth Editions.

Because outside translated stuff, why pay double or more the price for Vintage or Penguins with their occasional dodgy printing?

But I thought that Pengin was like the cheapest...

This. It seems that everything Vintage publishes is everything I read.

Having a favorite Publisher seems pretty shallow, even for /lit/.

Why? Certain publishers tend to cater for certain tastes, and readers often have certain tastes.

I love Soft Skull, I've been a fan since they published Dance of Days. They're publishing a Jonathan Lethem book focused on They Live soon.

Nope. Wordsworth (among others) are explicitly cheap.

The majority of my books are from the Penguin stable, and I have no complaint. Vintage is good. Though if anything comes to mind of theirs, it's mostly political/philosophical non-fiction from the 60s and 70s, which are almost as recognisable as their red-spined Classics. Panther and Pan are the other ones which come to mind.

Fuck yeah. The covers rock.

>> No.760301

Insanely cheap paper, no real typesetter, creases on the spine from merely opening the damn thing, feels like the book with fall apart after opening a couple of times.

NYRB publish a lot of good stuff, I'll always take a look at book if I see their logo on the spine.

I can vouch for their (vinyl?) hardcover books. Moby Dick set me back five dollars; the gold type might rubbing off the front cover, but I can't see it falling apart anytime soon.

Penguin Classics has a pretty good library,
also Feral House because someone needs to be doing what they're doing.

wow, that's almost a little sad. welcome to 10 years ago, wordsworth.

The American Library or whatever its name is. The ones that sell the collections by various authors in those beautiful hardbound copies with the black dust jackets. I wish I could put my name on them, but their books are always outstanding.

Not to hipster it up, but I also love McSweeney's for putting the UPC barcode on a sticker, and not directly on the damn book. That shit has been making books hideous for decades.
