howard zinn is overrated and just as biased as old white guy history

there is no "history" in that you study everything that happens before today. you have to pick a field. ancient china? colonial america? 20th century?

Historical fiction is lame. Just read things that are contemporary to the period you're studying. Ovid's good for Roman times, or Caesar's journals, or Aurelius' Meditations. Medieval times, go for Beowulf, early King Arthur stories, the Chanson de Roland, etc. Go from time period to time period and read whatever novels, poetry or plays they enjoyed then.

None.
If you're studying history, your view on the world, 'truth' and history as a subject itself will COMPLETELY change.
Just wait until you get a nice stash of required reading (trust me, you'll get plenty) which'll learn you to distinguish one view from the other.

Read the Twelve Caesars because it's like a tabloid for leaders of Rome. Good shit, especially starting at Tiberius and his little boy fetish.

I was given fun historical titles to read in college... The biography on Vlad the Impaler was great, forgot the author and I don't have the book with me. There's also a great biography on David (the biblical figure, not the Neoclassical artist) that is totally full of bias, author thinks he was a douchebag, but it's a fun read.

WW1, I think Guns of August is pretty good, but boring as hell. Here I Stand is the most thorough Martin Luther bio.
