This seems interesting, on a scale of 1-10 how hard would it be to get in?

Didn't go, but seconding this if you can get in. Seems like an awesome way to spend two years, basically a cool monasticism that combines academics with nature and soul-strengthening labor that many people die without doing.

The Telluride Foundation that runs Deep Springs is basically an academic secret society with houses for members only at the nation's best universities. Members who didn't go to Deep Springs are the kids who were tapped for their summer programs in high school. I would love to know what that network is like.

I went to Tufts and loved it, but it's probably not for everyone. I think there are two tiers of what smart people should look for in a school.

Tier A: if you want to play on the national and international stage in fields like finance, politics, management and technology, go to a prestigious university like a top 3 research uni or top 15 liberal arts college. This will probably cost money unless you're destitute enough for full financial aid coverage (these schools don't do many big merit scholarships).

Tier B: Seeking solid professional career in a field like law, medicine or engineering, but don't have delusions of grandeur and want to play it safe financially. Go to a flagship state school or regionally well-regarded private school that gives you merit scholarships, preferably one where you have connections and can get a full ride. Join a frat, make a 4.0 and get dat cheddar.

One with a big library and a community that makes you happy and is in line with your academic and life goals.

I read and write poetry. For me everywhere is college of there's books. For the less intelligent and materialistic, perhaps college is where the money is ensured after graduation.
