I picked my books basing on Hugo and Nebula awards. I stopped at American Gods.
Horrible, horrible book. Seriously, stay away from Gaiman. He's a godawful writer.

Sandman first, always sandman. Then Neverwhere, Good Omens, and then MAYBE American Gods.

Sandman and Neverwhere to get a good sense of Gaiman, Good Omens because it's awesome (but has a whole lot more Pratchett than Gaiman) and American Gods last, because it is fundamentally disappointing on every level.

When I read Bad Omens I had that feeling that I know who of two co-authors has written this particular part. Bad Omens combines Pratchett's humor (which I honestly don't like very much(which doesn't mean that I don't like it at all)) and Gaiman's presentation of plotline. This line is woven from lots of strings which are charecters and events and there's no one loose, they all connect and intertwine to make a whole story.
