Need some help here /lit/! I'm in the process of writing a stageplay, but am starting to worry that its dramatic action is far too self-centered around a single character and edging on the whiney sort

How do YOU stimulate audience interest in your characters? I've heard the old dogma "try and make your characters universal" a thousand times over, but prehaps there is other advice?

c'mon /lit/, don't fail me!

>> No.753577

you don't have to make your characters universal, just interesting.

>> No.753588

just a little tip: don't try to avoid stereotypes to make a really original character; it never works. you'll end up with a stereotypical character.

Alright, that seems fair.

My main problem is that the whole play centers around disillusionment and inabillity to really be free- basically grimdark apathy mixed with universal wrongdoing. This sounds great on paper, but nobody really wants to feel for a whiney little bitch who does everything wrong. Love is an easy way to create drama, but it feels like such a weak way of creating audience interest, and in this case would almost inevitably fall into gender stereotypes.

so, more advice on what makes someone interesting would be nice

It's up to you to create your character. If you can't do that then you can't write.

But I'm not going to tell you how to write your character. If you have a written draft of your work I'd help critique and whatnot. But if you can't make your characters dynamic don't write.
