Hey, /lit/, I have a problem and would like to get your opinion on it. It's concerning manuscript style.

I've got a character speaking in another language and I want it too be in italics. I understand that italics is rendered for manuscript style by underlining. My problem is I don't understand what I'm supposed to be underlining and what I'm not supposed to be underlining or if it matters at all.

For example:

>"Bonjour, mon amie!"

Should everything in between the quotation marks be underlined, including the comma and exclamation mark? To put another way, should everything between the quotes be in italics?

Same thing for:

>"Bonjour," he said, "mon amie!"

Thanks. Pic unrelated, but /lit/-themed.

Yes

Realized I wrote the feminine form of friend in French. Oops.

Anyway.

Thanks.

For the broken quotation, I would also underline the comma immediately following bonjour?
