Inclined to think that reading the Bible often has the opposite effect.

This to be honest.

You'd be better off going full medieval peasant and just taking your local priest at his world.

Yeah. I thought Catholicism was sounding stupider by the year as a kid, so I read the Bible and that convinced me all of Christianity must be moronic to follow it.

This is pretty right desu senpai. Christianity would almost be better if you leave out some parts of the Bible that aren't often discussed. By which I mean we would feel less responsibility for actions that are condoned in those parts. The fact that you find them mentioned for the first time reading by yourself just means that they make other Christians uncomfortable, too.

They should just throw out anything except the gospels to be honest.

Yes, after reading the New Testament. I was never brought up in a religious family and I had very little knowledge of the Bible since I was an atheist in my teen years (edgy years) and the quality of teaching in schools is absurdly bad.

But that's that. I have heard things about the Old Testament that have warded me off reading it for now. Not about its content but rather the validity of it. Haven't researched about it as of yet though.

“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them."

If Jesus thought it wasn't all that bad, and since he kinda claimed to be the guy the Jews were expecting, don't you think you should kinda know it? How does the NT even make sense to you if you don't at least know the more important stuff in the OT?

So you call yourself a Christian but are completely unfamiliar with most of the Bible?

This was me. I was fine being a Christian culturally. However, as soon as I took my religion seriously and begun to read it, I quickly realized how awful it was. I found higher morals and ethics inside myself, than what the bible proposes..

No, I became a Jew after reading it.

The two, to my knowledge, are not overly dependent upon each other. The Jews reject Christ for a reason. However, I do know the 'most important stuff' (whatever you classify that as) to have an understanding of the New Testament, for example the Massacre of the Innocents and its prophecy in the Old Testament, though I imagine it is a myth and as with all religions come an element of myth making. I never said I do not intend to read it - indeed, I am in the process of reading it now though I still have my doubts about diving in to dedicate my reading time to it.

I never knew quantity now mattered more, but good to know. To be Christian, in the most basic terms, is to believe in Christ and His word. So to answer your question, yes I do.

You can't truly understand who Jesus is without the OT. This is especially true with Paul's epistles and the gospel according to Matthew, along with numerous references in Revelations.

To you and anyone reading the OT, here's a tip that might help from my "armchair philosophy", especially if you're christian.
God, and the uncorrputed things that proceed from God, are good. Being good, God is both just and loving, seen in the works of God, his law, and the new covenant.
Jesus, being God, also follows this, frequently mentioning and referencing old testament punishments, as below.

Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city. -Matthew 10:15

Or those eighteen, upon whom the tower in Siloam fell, and slew them, think ye that they were sinners above all men that dwelt in Jerusalem? -Luke 13:4
I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. -Luke 13:5

But this one verse to remember, in connecting the OT and NT, is this:
Say not: "Great is his mercy; my many sins he will forgive." For mercy and anger are alike with him; upon the wicked alights his wrath.
(From Sirach)
And may God bless you.

How do I get over the "all-christians-are-idiots/christianity-is-stupid" meme that has been part of my being ever since high school?

>> No.7516298

No, but after reading the bible I've developed an active disdain for Christians for believing this shit whereas before it was a simple looking down on. I feel like Christianity is a meme that people are taking seriously to either troll me or they're just flat out retarded.

I started a short story that takes place in a church rate :

The organ player left a note written in british slang . he said and i translate loosely, the whores in the choir have a nasty vibrato. Natalie sings from her nose and even god couldnt help shannon. Shes more tone deaf than she is ugly. Every time rita hits a high c i wonder if thats how she sounds when she's fucking the priest. I took two pints of holy wine from the cellar . later bitches

The priest shook his head. He'd never fuck Rita. she's too old. Tina on the other hand... Her pussy was divine creation. Sweeter than a frosted communion wafer. Ripe and impregnated with the fear of God , she'd suck twelve holy dicks for a ticket to the pearly gates.
