I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with the mentality, it's the way that it manifests in /lit/. It turns the culture into a contest of who "gets it" which detracts from actual discussion. Which shouldn't even be necessary because the people that come to an anonymous imageboard to discuss literature are pretty self-selective to begin with.
