Carl Sagan's Cosmos, yay or nay? Is the book the exact same thing as the show? Even so, I think I'd understand better by reading it.
Is there a more effective and informative starter book out there? I'm kind of interested in the subject but not enough to dive into a sea of esoteric terminology for 1000 pages either
Also feel free to let me know if it's way too pleb and watered down in order to perhaps point me in a more sophisticated direction. I've neither seen an episode nor flipped through the book so I'm pretty clueless about how elaborate the content is...

It's more or less the same as the show. It's not as PATRISHUN as something written for scientists but it's fun and engaging. If you're younger and have an average education you'll probably be blown away by it.

I'm a college student majoring in philosophy and econ so I should probably start with something else. Do you have recs for a more sophisticated book to get into the subject?

Haven't read the book but the show is still top notch. It's not speculative at all, only covers what's known, so it's all still informative and not outdated at all. Fabulous show.

As for reading about science I'd probably check out A Short History of Nearly Everything (good for the history of science especially) and the Easy and Not so Easy Pieces by Feynman.

But why would I waste my time reading it if I know there's a more informative book out there?

It's good. It's like taking psychedelics. He's just associated with Reddit because he's accessible.
