Why is it that so many OT characters like Abraham, Isaac and even King David are cowardly, frightened and often deceitful.

While Jesus and later the Apostles in Acts and the epistolary literature have conviction, courage and always speak truthfully? Did the OT characters not trust in God?

OT are gulf arabs, NT are levantines.

Jesus was God, but even he got scared.
The apostles weren't perfect either, constantly doubting God, who they met in the flesh, and denying him (in the case of Peter).
