What would you recommend as a Christmas present for my brother who enjoyed Blood Meridian? Something by another postwar American author?

Is it dark in the same way as blood meridian or just bleak? I lust for dread. Help me pick a book.
How is child of god? How does Faulkner compare to McCarthy?

Child of God is brilliant, as is Outer Dark. Both better stories than The Road. Butcher's Crossing is not as dark per se, but it certainly shows beauty in senseless violence and death in a similar manner to that of Blood Meridian.

Butchers Crossing is a great suggestion.

If he likes more experimental stuff, The Beetle Leg by John Hawkes or Ghost Town by Robert Coover are great postmodern westerns.

I would also suggest Mason and Dixon by Thomas Pynchon.
