Hey /lit/

I'm kind of new to books and wanted to know how you guys feel about translations. I'm trying to decide whether I want to read picture related and other books in English or my native language, German. I don't actually think my English is significantly better than my mother tongue, but I might be missing some advanced vocabulary. How much of the prose is important to works like Gatsby?

Bottom line I'd also appreciate some recs for modern pieces.

It's an amazing novel. Definetly worth reading. It depends on fluent you are in English. If you can definitely read it in English but you want to enjoy it so do whatever makes for a better reading experience

I first read the controversial Hungarian translation and rather enjoyed it, but when I got my hands on the original I realized how much better it was. It's not a hard text, I can't imagine you wouldn't understand it.

English is probably the last language you'd want to read in translation. Not only because it has such subtlty and complexity of meaning dependant upon word choice but also because its practically a free space on the language bingo card.
