What are your thoughts on Dear Esther? Is it /lit/ enough?

>I’ve begun my voyage in a paper boat without a bottom; I will fly to the moon in it. I have been folded along a crease in time, a weakness in the sheet of life. Now, you’ve settled on the opposite side of the paper to me; I can see your traces in the ink that soaks through the fibre, the pulped vegetation. When we become waterlogged, and the cage disintergrates, we will intermingle. When this paper aeroplane leaves the cliff edge, and carves parallel vapour trails in the dark, we will come together.

Is this what video game nerds think poetry is like?

>> No.7417876

it was a very tedious game. just walk walk walk around a rainy island with embarrassingly overwritten pretentious dialogue playing each time you hit a new area

Cracked this game out of curiousity about what it offers. Stopped after 2-3 area visits. This game is really fucking boring, nothing happens at all!

How terribly saccharine, friend. Video games should stick to being video games

I feel the same. A friend of mine seemed to think it was some bold experiment representing new possibilities for the medium. But it was just a bunch of nonsense dialogue. It seemed to be trying very hard to be explicitly profound, much in the way you'd expect someone to write poetry if they'd rarely ever read it. All this talk of grand universal concepts like life and time and love, with the particular relegated to the background.

I don't know what the fact that this game was highly praised by critics says for gaming culture. They seem to be infatuated with themselves yet they're desperately in need of the assurance that games are a respectable art form. Hence the proliferation of pretentious games with gimmicky, art school -esque formal "innovations."

Ironically, I think that the games that don't even attempt to be anything like a work of art are the greatest examples of art in video games. Something like Tetris or Super Mario Brothers are beautifully useless and devoid of meaning.

I feel a lot of these "art games" try to tackle the medium through this perspective, ending up with a boring on-rails game, that would be better as a film. Games should have engaging mechanics before trying to tell a story.

Let me try:
>Esther- your spirit echoes to me from all the points of the compass. Up through this paper-thin earth and down from the low heavens. Esther. I've turned my back on the world and pulled up that which anchors me to my sanity, letting my soul drift aimlessly out into the sea of your memory...

I dunno what this game is about so forgive me if Esther is a houseplant or some shit lol
