I'm interested in reading some Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and I know One Hundred Years of Solitude is supposed to be his best but I don't feel like getting into a book three hundred pages right now. What novella would you guys suggest? Is Memories of My Melancholy Whores any good? How about his short stories?

>> No.741754

Chronicle of a death foretold. (not sure that is the English title)

>> No.741761

you fool. read one hundred years of solitude. 300 pages isn't shit. it really is the best and you'll be glad you read it.

his collection of novellas weren't bad. liked them better than the short stories. i think all the novellas in the set were good except for 1. but for serious. read one hundred years and stop being a little bitch plz. you won't regret it.

I'm not being a little bitch. I'm just currently reading five books of poetry, For Whom the Bell Tolls, Franny and Zooey, and The Collected Works of Raymond Carver. Don't feel like reading something long right now, but maybe I'll try out Hundred Years.

Jesus, you wimp. Just read Chronicle of a death foretold already.

>> No.741859

My intro to Marquez was Memories of my Melancholy Whores. I enjoyed it immensely.

>> No.741861

do they even make real books that are under 300 pages?

>> No.741880

>>741861
Steinbeck did.

>> No.741886

whatever. a good book is a good book. i've read short stories that were only 4-5 pages that were great. length does not equal quality.

i was just teasing you, op. and i can't be hard on you. you're reading raymond carver and he's the fucking man. not enough respect on this board for him. and considering he's like murakami's fave author his name should be more popular (not that it isn't but more than it is).

>> No.741887

Three hundred pages with nearly zero dialogue.

AND IT FUCKING KICKS ASS.

Stop being a faggot and read One hundred years of solitude.

>implying 300 pages is a lot (or "are many"?)

>> No.744034

I hate his novels.
I was first introduced to him by way of The Man with Enormous Wings and The Handsomest Drowned Man in the World.

Great short stories.

>> No.744051

Short story, A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings.

It's what got me into magic-realism.

>> No.744062

You could always read "Love in Times of Cholera" or whatever the translated title is.

>> No.744091

If you're looking for a really short Marquez story try "The Handsomest Drowned Man in the World", but 100 years is still probably the best.

Colombian here.

read CRONICA DE UNA MUERTE ANUNCIADA.

is his best work in my honest opinion

DUDE FUCK MARQUEZ READ THIS

>> No.744406

Oh I'm sorry sir, I don't read anything over three pages long. Can you recommend anything around two-thousand words?

>> No.744437

>>744406

Two thousand words is about 7-10 pages.

I loved it, but I preferred Cién años de soledad.

Was this comment sarcastic? Because you can find plenty of great short stories of such lenght.
