Fanbase still is increasing in size but enthusiasm seems stagnant or depreciating. /mlp/ has its constant "doompaul" posters bringing harbingers of the show and fandom's demise. how did baneposting gain so much momentum? why it exploded exponentially while 99,9% of memes die before they even become memes proper? does this happen randomly or do all the successful memes have common characteristics? what if you could manufacture memes?

one thing succesful memes seem to share is that they're all essentially absurd to some degree. it's impossible to monetize them(except maybe doing shirts with them or something), no one can gain any authority with them(no meme gurus or anything). like said before, they're a collective race towards greater absurdism, while they share the tendency of art to become more complex with increasingly numerous references to pop culture, board culture and other memes.

I'm afraid that in 20 years or so memes can legitimately be considered art and that you need to have accumulated years of specialized meme knowledge to fully appreciate the most complex ones that will be mazes of subversions, countersubversions, references and pastiches.
