Here, I felt, I was gaining a clue to an inner understanding of the cult of the hero. The cynicism that regards all hero worship as comical is always shadowed by a sense of physical inferiority. Invariably, it is the man who believes himself to be physically lacking in heroic attributes who speaks mockingly of the hero; and when he does so, how dishonest it is that his phraseology, partaking ostensibly of a logic so universal and general, should not (or at least should be assumed by the general public not to) give any clue to his physical characteristics.

I find it odd that you have written down something which I myself thought a few weeks ago, almost word for word. Over the past few weeks I have been lifting weights and running to develop my fitness and, as a result of this, have become more interested in the notion of the hero. I am not particularly conservative or traditional, but I would like to become more masculine, independent and confidant. I agree that I have never seen anyone who demonstrated heroic qualities criticise the hero.
