I'm looking to get my brother books for Christmas. He's interested in being a neurosurgeon, and in medicine in general.

Other than Grey's anatomy, what would you recommend?

Get something unrelated to medicine. No one wants to be constantly reminded about their job.

Get him Moby-Dick. It's a great novel and a book every man should read.

Doc here.

Grey's anatomy is crap, great plates but very much 1890 and it's all in the public domain anyway. Also greyscale as fuck.

Get him Netter, at least his work is coloured and used in Med Schools round the world to this very day.

If you want to give him something light but still on topic get him the controversial: We are our Brains: From the Womb to Alzheimer’s by Dick Swaab.

And to be fair most of my colleagues are illiterate fucks reading pulp. Probably to cool down from looking at medical textbooks which often utilise sentence structures so deviously complex DFW would cry.

This is a great recommendation for casual but incredibly interesting writing vaguely related to the medical field. An Anthropologist on Mars is a must-read. For anyone.
