How many writers are on /lit/ right now? Anyone published?

I write some god awful sonnets and wish to keep improving to the point of being publishable.

>> No.737785

I write sometimes, and I think my fiction is on its way to becoming decent.

And good luck with that sonnet thing, OP. Poetry is a pretty tough field to make any money in these days.

Luckily I'm also working on an Engineering degree.

Why would you wanna publish? To make money?

I write because I like writing. People that set out to write or make music to become famous might as well go onto a reality TV show or something.

Merely to share my life experience with like-minded people.

getting published in ZWG at some stage - ATM I'm caught in the backlog.

Obviously. If you can make a living by writing, well then, that's a dream come true. You get to do something you love and get by on that.

Also, getting published, you're able to share your story with countless other people.

I write OP, and this weekend I went and visited my uni mate who lives down South (Northern Britfag) anyways, his dad is a famous and sucessful illustrator and author and I ended up sleeping in his studio - swanky as fuck, sofas, wall to wall dvds CDs,pc's,artwork, overlooking gorgeous countryside. Apparantly he could afford to live off his two royalty checks he recieves every year, and he's completely paid off his (huge) house. He gets 1p everytime someone takes out one of his books from the library too - thought that was a cool little perk, despite obviously not earning him a great deal.

I don't mean to rub anyone's face in it, but I found just chilling in his studio very inspiring. He's obviously worked hard at what he does though.

I'm not gonna say who it is, cos obviously this is 4chan.

Guess we've all just gotta keep plugging away at our craft.

english major fag here...
i write prose/poetry on occasion. would be nice to get published, but its damn hard to get anywhere with it. my plan is to become a lit professor so that i'll have enough stability to write without the need for massive sales or pandering to an audience. very original, i know....

>> No.737971

sorry but there is no market for lit professors. compare the number of people getting PhDs in lit with the number of available jobs. and then look at the number of tenure track jobs, which is even smaller, and are the only way to have stability while teaching.

>> No.737993

I too fancy myself as a poet, OP. I have no real hope of getting published so I'm also working on an unrelated degree.

i'm planning on going overseas, probably asia when i start my career. theres lots of opportunities esp in china.
as well, ive got family that've taught for certain major universities that will help me get my foot in the door. or at least im hoping.
so much for dreams, lol.
but if i've got the wrong idea, what should i do with an english degree then? inb4 take shit on it or flush down toilet.

>> No.738006

I'd say it's a lot harder to get published as a poet than as an author, but that's just what I think. I'm getting back into writing myself--short stories and flash fiction, need to start off small and gain momentum for novels.

Looking to get a book published in a couple of years or so (still writing it), anyone know of any good UK publishers?

>> No.738082

I just finished the fifth draft of a novel-length story about (no joke) a chan-style website. I've queried just about every agent in the world, nobody so far wants to rep it. I may end up self-pubbing.

I have about ten short stories and nf articles published.

>> No.738085

Concentrate on constantly improving your writing. Write every single day.

Worry about getting published later.

You're aware that more famous authors will generally receive larger advances and generate more sales than less famous authors, right? And that most writers would prefer to be able to live off writing than needing a day job?

Considering the kind of junk that gets self-published, you might not want that on your record. Publishers read manuscripts with a mind to culling at the slightest provocation and keep the survivors.
