Current events with ISIS have led me to investigate Islamic theology (on a very cursory level), and it amazes me how rich and divergent different interpretations and texts can be, and how they sometimes interconnect with Christian and Judaic texts, each of those religions with their own rich histories. It's nuts how it's all almost this grand narrative linking these three major religions with a mind boggling amount of offshoots.

And what really amazes me is that it's all complete bullshit. How does something like this happen? How does something so obviously bullshit evolve and grow into the richness of Abrahamic theology?

These don't address the point of my thread, though, which is how does such a detailed mythology with such ardent followers originate and evolve, flowering into varied and competing interpretations? The same could be asked of Greek mythologies, but since we currently live in a world of Abrahamic religions I thought it would be more relevant.

The reason so many people bought into Muhammed despite Christ saying there would be no more profits is because many of Muhammed's early followers were Pagans and as such did not give a single fuck about what Christ said.

If some guy came to you and said "Convert to New-Confucianism or die", would it matter in the slightest to you if Confucianism said "Yeah, nah, Confucius was the last prophet to come along, there will be no more"?
