Hi Guys i read some short stories from Bukowski, but i hate it, what is so good about him? is basically cursing a lot and using shitty languange and thats it.

>> No.7340929

He's a Jewish disestablishmentarian. Thats all it takes to make it

>> No.7340944

he was an anti-trans homosexual.

I had the same reaction when I first read some of his poetry and a couple of his novels. I'd heard from other people about how he was supposedly this great writer, but the books themselves don't come anywhere near that.

I suspect it's the image of Bukowski that people actually like, this idea of a wild writer flinging off poems and stories in between bouts of fucking and drinking.

What'd you read?
I found Notes of a Dirty Old Man really easy to come back to whenever I was bored, something I could pick up while I was waiting for the bus or in between classes.

I read women when I was 15 and really enjoyed it. Recently got ham on rye and post office. Ham on rye is pretty good. I can't really into his poetry. I usually read them to my buddies on camping trips because they're funny.

How new are you?

Ham on Rye and Post Office are his two best novels imo. factotum and women are okay too, not great though. hollywood i haven't read.

OP, he was a real craftsman with his words. He explains things really well. when reading his stories I'm never confused as to which character is doing what, why they're doing it, what bukowski is trying to say. it's kind of abstract, I don't think I've explained it well, but I think the 'form' of his stories is more important than the 'content'. People who read for the latter are plebs, people who read to study to former and understand how to craft prose carefully and effectively are doing it right.

I like a few of his poems but I'm a pleb when it comes to poetry.

Bukowski's form is complete shit.
If you usually find difficult to understand "which character is doing what" and solving that shit is what you appreciate in Bukowski, that means you are a shitty reader.
Bukowski's prose ain't got no fucking mistery to dig into. Shit could be written by any teen who can handle his pretensions and make em look dirty.

I'm about to read this asshole's works probably starting with Factotum. I heard a lot about him but somehow I never checked him out.

That was really beautiful. I never got into poetry but I could listen to stuff like that being read all day. The film reminded me of something from the old PBS and NFB days. Poems make me feel a little stupid though - I think I sort of got the meaning at the end but probably not.

Like him or not he provides insight into the life of a bitter, dirty, alcoholic loser, and I think there's value in that.

He doesn't seem that bad. Have you seen the interview where his future wife talks about how she's going to ϲuckold him all she wants and there's nothing that he can do about it? She goads him into freaking out in front of the interviewer with a really dirty trick. If some woman came into your life and started acting like that, especially in front of other people, I'm sure you would be an angry alcoholic too.
