Just sat in front of this at the national gallery of art. I couldn't find a photo to do it justice, but it has some of the prettiest colors I've ever seen in a painting.

I loved this song by Berlioz when I was a teenager, and even though it's about Ophelia from Hamlet I always thought this painting captured reverent, solemn longing. The two (song and painting) go hand in hand, and this is the lady of a young man's dreams: spending her day longing for man.

Now I consider this as pathetically romantic as egotistical, but it's a pair of art and song that will always stick with me and I will always love.

I always envisioned the paining is framed at an angle like \.
It you just tilt slightly when you look at it, you get a massive sense of vertigo and it appears as if the dog is peering straight down at you.

I always imagined the dog is accompanying his master on a hike and the master has fallen down a ravine or something and broken his leg. All he can do is look up at the grey sky while his loyal dog looks down faithfully yet powerless to help.

Powerful shit. How can a man paint a world without even showing it?
