>the only philosophy club at my university is run by a 150kg neckbeard
>topics for weekly discussions so far include: transhumanism, atheism, utilitarianism, animal rights
is this the norm for most schools, or is mine just especially shitty?

My university had every branch of commie, but not even identity politics faux commies, but the old skool types that still stubbornly and dogmatically stick to the old hermeneutics.
And they hated Zizek, because he called 20th century communism a mistake.

The others were either apolitical Chads, effeminate social democrats or third positionists ( and honestly the only intelligent dudes at my whole uni, even though I think it's a farce ).
Every now and then you had the STEM master race neckbeard atheist in lonesome squalor thinking he'll be landed gentry upon graduating.

Truly, it didn't even feel like the 21st century. Some places are honestly still stuck in another century.

Are this clubs always so political? I mean, I don't have a degree in philosophy but if anything my fair-share or reading pulled me away from politics and deeper into individualism.

If you're someone who wants to have philosophical discussions by creating a club rather than simply discussing it among intelligent friends, of course you're going to want to talk about shit like that.
