I would say because in a book all the characters and events happen as your imagination sees fit so they are tailored by you for you. Whereas in movies what is there is there. This being the cause for why movies are so often shit compared to the book.

How can anyone ever possibly think movies are better than books?

Like honestly, movies as a medium are so compromised and corrupt. They are practically giant commercials half the time, and even independent and art movies are compromised because they have no talent involved.

There are some rare exceptions. But even those are often based on a book in the first place, and no movie is ever able to develop the long lasting relations that a book can impart. A good novel makes you feel like you've actually lived with the characters. A movie is a snapshot into a world at best. And its hardly ever at best.
