I'm trying to get my girlfriend into reading for pleasure. Until now she's only read young adult literature while I enjoy classics, particularly adventures. I'm looking for some recommendations that a 22-year-old European girl would like that we could read together.

- feminine
- creative protagonist
- sad/tragic
- ideally contemporary

Don't try to make her read something that she could relate to, that's basically the definition of YA fiction.

What does she like ?
What kind of music/movies/art ?

Make her read obscure convoluted philosophy so that she decides reading is not for her

that's a good point. I guess I just want an entertaining, adventure story that keeps her attention. Music not so much, but big into painting, sculpture, and jewelry.

>she decides reading is not for her
this would be the worst outcome.

Also Murakami if she's a basic bitch.

Why do not do a read of The Count of Monte Cristo together? It sounds like it fits all the criteria and both of you would enjoy it

What kind ?

Try to get her some fun novellas like A dog's heart, Gogol's Petersburg tales, fables by Aesop, La Fontaine.
Fun and short is nice for a start.

Avoid shit like this, Murakami's a bad writer.

it's one of my personal favorites and I'd love a second read, but for her I fear it's a bit too much at this stage.

I can't speak for everybody but it got me back into reading after a long break and as long as you're willing to go for an occaaional google on French revolutionary history, the references aren't too complex. Do you think the length would put her off?

Oh and if you're going to go for Murakami then I'd suggest Norweigan Wood given your criteria, but I find 1Q84 a far more interesting novel conceptually
