also, >>726518 and goodreads seems like a legit site.

Goodreads is legit. I've been a member for over a year. It's great for finding reviews from people who actually read regularly. Though some of them can be pretentious.

>> No.727598

>go to Amazon
>read reviews for a book
>"THIS IS TOO EXPENSIVE FOR A KINDLE BOOK"

Fucking Amazon. I want both a review of the book, without spoilers, and some time spent on the book itself (does the binding fall apart, does the ink smudge, etc).

>> No.727641

>>727598

Often comments on the binding are useful, on account of differing editions. For instance those dreadful, overpriced print-on-demand jobs.

What makes me apoplectic are the one-star seller reviews. Yes, we want to hear about how the book smells like cigarette smoke, or how the book hasn't arrived yet, and that you'll never buy from this place again.

>> No.727645

>>727575

Most authors also write criticism, you shouldn't be such a sillyhead

>> No.727661

>>727645
that makes them professional authors, not professional critics.
dont be such an illiterate-head

>> No.727716

>>727661

Professional critics are (or should be) journalists and essayists with a literary preoccupation. Subsequently they probably know what they're writing about in relation to the author, history, literature, etc..

But when I made the original comment, it was mainly in relation to the newspapers themselves, and their evaporating column space. Not to mention practices such as outsourcing material which might have originated halfway across the world, and more for the critic's name than the review/essay itself. Rather than the critic being in direct and continuous employment by the newspaper.

First suggestions is "Dune" by Frank Herbert, along with the rest of the series is a great read. Sci-Fi-Fantasy.

Second is the "Sword of Truth" series which is a fantasy.

Third is a fantasy war series "The Malazan Book of the Fallen".

But I will have to agree, the ending was a bit disappointing, as if the author ran out of steam and could not think of a proper ending.

>> No.727873

>> No.727884

>>727828
It's fine, If you skip half of it. So many of the books were padding, or just outright shit.
If you only read
Wizard's first rule
Stone of tears
Faith of the fallen
and the ending trilogy (phantom chainfire confessor)
It's pretty good. And don't worry about missing anything important, The author fills you in about anything that's really vital. the only other book in the series worth a damn is soul of the fire, but it's kinda iffy. you can include it if you want, but meh.

Ask a librarian to purchase the book or fill out a request at the library. They like to acquire books that people want to read; they won't know you want it if you don't let them know.
