Its pointless to try to find inherent meaning in Murakami's work because Murakami puts little meaning in his work. He just writes interesting neat ideas he likes, and purposefully leaves things vague and unexplained so that the reader can put their own ideas and thoughts into the narrative.
Sometimes this works, sometimes it doesn't.
