I didn't make it, although I could see why someone would make it. That book's protagonist is pretty much an edgelord of today. Of course back then I guess it would seem revolutionary, but today he bears an uncanny resemblance to a reddit neckbeard

Look. I must have read about 400 books prior to this, and fantasy is not even my genre. I rarely indulge in it for guilty pleasure reasons (i.e., plot/characters with no critical mind) and I don't read Stephen King nor fantasy/scifi, nor modern authors in general. I even dislike the LOTR movie adaptations, Gaiman, The Wheel of Time and what /lit/ considers genre fiction crap... but TBotNS somehow managed to blow my mind. I've re-read it twice as well as the companion books not to solve the plot nor fill in plot holes, but to see the intricate workings of his author. It wasn't your run of the mill kind of work, he revised a lot of it..

At any rate, /lit/ somehow confuses reading and liking a book for being a pleb or dumb. I don't know why that is. Sure it's got its cliches, its pacing issues, but the scale... the imagery, the symbols and the inner ramblings of a accidentally powerful madman. The first half of the first book was the closest to being infected with fever dreams I've been and I've checked most surrealism staples, and that's all thanks to the prose and a few sleight of hands in how the environment is described.

And it's all supposed to be a non-fiction account, btw. That's the frame of the "translation" (which tries to explain the vocabulary) which simply adds another layer of interpretation.
No matter all this, imo it's all about two things: a) the richness of characters and the concepts it explores, very rarely treated in most popular fantasy, from a quite mature even refined point of view (Proust and Borges were big influences, as well as G.K. Chesterton and Jack Vance -master of florid English prose).
b) The color and the tone of the narrative. Wolfe's prose might get you instantly, or it might not. For me, it did and it reminded me of why I loved Borges and encouraged me to study him closer (Jorge Luis, I mean).

tl;dr: you might like it, or not. don't be biased. who cares about other people's enthusiasm (i.e., hype)? just read the fucking 200 pages long 1st volume.

God, I hate these super huge ones. If you need to resize the template, you're doing it wrong.

>> No.7223300

most of these I feel have very odd or shallow expectations.
as in, for example, some seem to have the idea that somehow because it's old and 'ancient greek' and 'studied in academia' and 'part of the canon' or something, that it's just something boring, cut and dry, trite, 'snooze-worthy'
i suppose it's useful to see those as part of the set of reaction images /lit/ has, but it just seems awfully juvenile.
it's not particularly entertaining to view, in any case.

I mean, when you're using a fairly rigid and defined way to express your idea, but then you decide you're super special and completely throw out the template, then yeah, you're stupid. It's like those people that go into, let's say, a thread about Kafka solely to whine about how much they dislike Kafka. Why are you even there?

Go post a confession bear with comic sans and see how many people lose their shit. It's just annoying, and it's funny how you're the one losing your shit so much when I made a simple criticism.
