Nestor > Diomedes > Odysseus > Aeneas > Menelaus > Ajax the Greater > Agamemnon > Achilles > Hector > Patroclus > Ajax the Lesser

Rest are literally whos

mortal scum > the gods
struggling, doomed mortals, cured by fate and hubris, striving to succeed anyway
vs.
preening, vain, squabbling arseholes who just like to fuck with mortals for the lulz

Why is Nestor, a senile old man that his only good point in speaking gently, above Diomedes that wounded two gods?
Anyway Hector is the best.
"Fight for your country—that is the best, the only omen!"

The whole reason Greeks are as revered as they are is because they were the first civilization to equate gods and men; Gods were no longer some unobtainable, foreign divine holiness beyond Humans, they were of human form as well. They quarreled like humans, they argued like humans, they loved and had flings like humans, they debauched and partook in "degeneracy" like humans. Even mortals became half gods, and formed immortal or half god mortals. Deities weren't lowered, Humans were raised. It was a majorly progressive point in human civilization and one of the reasons they were as innovative as they were.

You can do that if you want but one of the joys of the book is putting together how exactly the poem and the commentary are related - a bit different than they might seem at first glance.

Ultimately you are probably fine just reading both straight through (but flipping back to the poem from the commentary when you need to remember what the commentary is on), but I would feel it out for yourself because that's part of the fun.

Thoughts on Fagles? Trying to decide between his or Lattimore's translation of the Oresteia.
