So I want a recommendation for a book, I really like the idea of reading something with fighting. Where a lot of thought and reflection contrast something so simple and brutal.

I guess I'm just looking for something that builds and is exciting where a person or people seem near invincible from outside but not so much from an internal look and we get to see how the character gets to that point or a story that starts that way and goes a different(hopefully not ridiculous) direction. Even just something kind of along that idea would be great.

Just read blood meridian, It's fucking raw. Different from what you want, sure, but its a great book with loads of savage fighting and contemplation thereafter

Gates of Fire sounds like it could be what you want what you want. It's a very grounded story about the Battle of Thermopylae from the point of view of a Spartan helot. I think they teach it at West Point.

Another one that's all about breaking down and analysing hardened killing machines is Armor by John Steakly. I'm not too fond of this one but it seems to meet your criteria pretty well.

Iliad for violence and reflection, actually everything you've described is the Iliad.

Other suggestions I like, but are less ''graphic'' and more stories with a lot of violence in them are Icelandic sagas. I'd recommend ''Njal's Saga'' and ''The Saga of the Volsungs/The Volsunga Saga''
