You can take Mann to task on a lot, but "Death in Venice" is a magnificent work about aging and a lifetime of denying one's ... deeper impulses. A very autobiographical work from him. There's even a great line about how Aschenbach observes that Tadzio is "sickly" and "doesn't have long for this earth" and that pleases him greatly (having lost his own youth AND due to his jealousy/desire for youth)
