Stuff like Heidegger is good, stuff like Sartre is bad. The literary stuff like Camus is generally pretty good.

Phenomenology > existentialism

>> No.7165956

It's lead to some really fascinating work from around 1850-1950. Think Notes from the Underground, select Kafka stories, hell if you want to go farther back than that try When I Have Fears by Keats. Not strictly existentialist but an interesting example of early ideas about the theme.

>Phenomenology > existentialism
Contemplation [practice] >Phenomenology > existentialism

the intellect in the study of the phenomenology can bring you up to ''not being UNhappy'', but the state of happiness is purely a practice which is done by the contemplation.

reminder that phenomenology is the only human intellectual activity which is worth it. contemplate achieves the intellectual activity. In fact, the two must be done hand in hand.

contemplation prolongs the intellectual activity. In fact, the two must be done hand in hand, after the purely intellectual activity brings us to the state of ''being not unhappy''.

I think the train of ideas is interesting. I think my own personal outlook on existence could accurately tho broadly be considered existentialist. I think the set of such ideas that refers to itself as 'phenomenology' is usually more interesting and fruitful than the set that labels itself 'existentialism', but that's probably quibbling.

Phenomenology isn't an intellectual activity, it's a methodology. A rigorous methodological focus on the phenomenon and the facts, in particular the lived experience of consciousness, being, etc. In general also associated with a hermeneutic/interpretative approach to those phenomena.

So when one is doing something phenomonologically, one is trying to pay strict and rigorous attention to the details of the experience of consciousness, and trying to inquire into those facts.
