Is the reading group for Gravity's Rainbow by Thomas Pynchon still happening?

Pic related -- I got the same book today at a library sale for $1.

As far as I know it's still happening. If there's not a thread on October 1 I'll create one.

Don't waste your life reading meaningless books recommended to you by outcasts over the internet.

>> No.7159689

During our IJ reading, we realized how toxic Pynchon's ironic attitude is, and how it ruins modern life, so now we've turned our backs on Pynchon and every other post-modern author because they lead to nothing but a dead end. New Sincerety is the real key to a fulfilling life, not this garbage.

I got a neat idea. Reading V and GR simultaneously. Alternating by day. I think I may just do it.

Any chance of this being a yearly thing? I'm already waist-deep in a different long-ass book, and I want to read more of Pynchon's other stuff before I dive into GR.

>and I want to read more of Pynchon's other stuff before I dive into GR.
Why? I get so sick of hearing this. GR is a standalone work. Even V with which it shares a few themes and characters, it is entirely a book separate and individual in itself. You needn't "accustom yourself to [Pynchon's] style."

>> No.7160840

>GR is a standalone work
Not really, no. Thematically speaking it's basically a full blown sequel to V. Every other one of his books is basically standalone despite there being cameos and minor connections to other books but V. and Gravity's Rainbow are an exception.

I'm the guy you quoted.
For me, it's less because it's Pynchon, and more just because that's the way I read authors. I tend to read one of the 'more accessible' works, and then, if I enjoy it, I'll read through their bibliography in chronological order, skipping things that're often recommended to skip; if I really, *really* enjoy that initial book (in this case, tCoL49), then I'll tackle the whole of their ouevre out of order; do some research; find out which books are considered "the best" and save those for last.
Hence wanting to read GR later. M&D will follow.

Well, the premise of my posts has been that I don't know much about either, so I can't really defend or agree. /lit/ isn't the only place I've seen this position though, so it may be a meme and it may not; I'm sure I'll enjoy both either way.

I thought it was an amusing tale that was unjustifiably long.

Hey there are already many examples of New Sincerety going strong today, like bronies, and insufferable indie rock music.

This is b8, but I'll take it.

I've never understood why Pynchon's works get portrayed as being soulless. There's plenty of touching romanticism throughout Gravity's Rainbow.

I think you're assuming an intentionally patronizing opinion of a book you know is very well respected by literature lovers and critics alike while posting in a thread about it because you enjoy the sense of smug superiority and controversy it creates.

Here's your (You), at least you got that out of the amusing little tale.
