How do you feel about the literary works of James "plz respond" Franco?

I kind of feel a connection to him

we are both fans of some great literature but are too dumb to write our own

He got an English professor fired for marking him low

>> No.7161082

>>7161043

He's using his fame to bully or tempt a bunch of institutions into giving him things he doesn't deserve. He went to multiple colleges simultaneously, taking more than the maximum units, while working on movies: it is impossible for him to do work of a passing quality under those conditions.

He's gotten short fiction and poetry published that wouldn't have even gotten into most print journals if he weren't famous enough to have Frank Bidart hang out with him to try and seem cooler and more relevant.

Freaks and Geeks is amazing, and some of his films and his roles in them are pretty great—though never in the 'artistic' way he ever so desperately wants to achieve. Everything else, however, is painfully mediocre at best and then there's his abuse of status as noted here: >>7161082

What's funny is I truly wish he was as talented he no doubt believes himself to be: James Franco, renowned and innovative intellectual and highly talented and diverse filmmaker/actor and writer. All because I love Freaks and Geeks so much (I want all of the alumni to have success). Shame.

He taught a screenwriting class I took at UCLA

It was interesting, he seems like a guy with good ideas but is trying to do so much at once that none of them end of coming rightly to fruition

i think i would like franco if he was a short story guy. his stuff goes on too long about stuff normal people either dont care about or have moved past.

it seems like he is one of those guys who gets really excited about reading like art of war and wants to create something iconic like that, but lacks the tools to do it.

He does gay things and identifies with gay icons but he isn't gay. He produced/directed the artsy gay film Interior Leather Bar, plays gay/bi characters like James Dean, once posted a picture of himself dressed as Batman with cum on his face... etc. People (ultraliberals and ultraconservatives, mostly) don't like this for all kinds of reasons.

He has a BFA in English from UCLA, MFAs in writing from Columbia University and Brooklyn College, an MFA in film from NYU's Tisch, and he's working on his PhD at Yale. He took up to 62 credits per quarter (when a normal student is limited to 19). He also earned credits for his work on Spider-Man 3. People (including a former professor) have come out and said that he didn't earn his grades and was given his degrees because of his fame.

He's had his short films, paintings, sculptures, drawings, and installation pieces... etc. featured at important art galleries. Some people think this happened because of his fame and not the quality of his art. Same thing happened when he became a published writer. Same thing happened when he became a dance-theater director at the Stella Adler Studio of Acting. Same thing happened when he was given a teaching position at NYU's Tisch. Same thing happened when he was given a teaching position at Palo Alto High School.

He also tried to bang a 17-year-old girl and that pissed off a bunch of people.

>every kid who knows anything basic about philosophy thinks this
Can you explain why 'every kid who knows anything basic about philosophy', who are, presumably, just beginning to wrestle with ideas like utilitarianism, the Ship of Theseus, existentialism., would automatically conclude the thesis of general semantics and post-structuralism (where that quote actually came from)?

>not that it's true, but it's very common
Could you explain why the Korzybskian semantic framework may be a false supposition?
