how do you improve your skills in dialouge writing

>> No.7156552

sometimes if I have a difficult scene to write between two lovers I ask my GF if she wants to do some roleplaying. I explain her character to her at length, we get really into it. I have a photogenic memory so I record it all in my head and the next day I have something to work with and maybe edit down. she's kinda kinky for that so it works for me ;) idk about you mate

Delillo has incredible dialogue. Not the way people speak, but just great.

First, learn how to spell dialogue correctly.

Next, when you're out in public, eavesdrop on conversations. Don't necessarily listen to what's being said, but rather how it's being spoken. Listen for slang, word emphasis, pauses and breaks, how people speak over one another.

Then write down the conversation as you heard it. Read it out loud.

Repeat.

fuck all the idiots in here assuming that dialog needs to be naturalistic and realistic in order to be good

spend time analyzing the dialog in DeLillo's novels and realize that sometimes the highly artificial feels more real than the actual

By not drinking after receiving a sever concussion like a jackass.

the only real criticism of dialogue is that you can't use it to accomplish exposition. anyone who says 'this doesn't sound like how people talk' is a pleb.

>> No.7157689

if you are really struggling it is probably because characters aren't clear in your mind. They do not convince you.

Once they do the character's voice will be in your head constantly and basically dictate you dialogue.

Cheers

>tfw good at dialogue
>tfw awful at descriptive prose but too lazy to write plays or screenplays because of the formatting

I always want to go for a shorthand. Meaning, if I want to describe a diner, for example, I just feel the strong urge to write that it ''looked like the diner from X''.
