people just don't like how any critique of her is presumed to be due to racism. her headband is analogous to the clothing of black female slaves, therefore one might assume she writes as a disadvantaged subject, cast down and aside by merciless and pale patriarchal overlords. the lack of such narratives from the last several thousand years of horrific abuse and oppression by old, rich white men suggests that this woman is not the product of a sudden mass cultural enlightenment but another rabble-rouser hopping on a not-uncontroversial bandwagon many view as a well-intentioned journey in an incorrect and tragic direction.
black lesbian here btw

>> No.7155461

For me she's only interesting as an object of desire, i.e. to use as a masturbatory prop. As a woman, that is all the value that she can have. She's an instrument to my sexual self-gratification.

She can't write or think. She's of an inferior mind being both black and a woman.

Which reminds me of Wittgenstein. In his younger days, he read some kekworthy book (sex and character) that implied you're either a man or a woman/jew. He took that by heart and worked all his life to be a man.

I've only read On Beauty. It was competent but nothing special. Her prose is good, but I mean that in the worst way possible. It was very Oxbridge and unoriginal. If she were white nobody would look at her work twice.

I don't really like someone that is clearly educated who adopts a high literary style trying to then sell us their black experience. Zadie Smith is as white as they come.

I'd give her more of a chance but I suspect she hasn't written anything interesting and there are far more interesting things to digest. I've read a few of her essays and I feel like they showed her age.

the most important thing about her is not that she's black, or that she's a woman, or that she's a black woman, or whatever. don't be distracted by identity politics, that what they want you to be focus on. the most important thing about her is that she went to harvard. that is who she is, that is what she is, that is all she will ever be.

What? Have you read a lot of black female literature because that is definitely not true.

It's probably about as introductory as you can get, but The Bluest Eye is amazingly compelling. You could remove most of the references to race and still have a touching look at innocence.

I reread Changing My Mind last year and found myself disagreeing with more of it -particularly her idea that Americans can't read Kafka- but they're still really good.

I've found a lot of her actual fiction kind of, well...boring. The last thing she wrote for The Paris Review (at least I think it was the last thing) just felt like the fragmentary stuff I wrote a couple of years back and, to be honest, still write.

No, the Felix part was pretty good, but then that was the most traditional part of the novel. The opening part centering around that girl that can't decide what she wants wants to be Eimear McBride, but doesn't go far enough.

She's failed to develop past White Teeth, which was good but not amazing. Her essays are good. I get the sense that, instead of developing the sharp edge White Teeth had, she blunted it in response to James Woods' "Hysterical Realism" criticisms, into Woods idea of good novels, which is skilled observation (which it isn't), and DFW basically becoming the poster boy for the genre. Now she's just a decent but ultimately minor "systems novelist" like the Franz. She's moving more and more into prose, and away from the poetry that makes for great novels. She's also probably gotten insulated from the world by early fame.

Not really epic. He's just describes how they write and then says that its "bad because I say its bad".

I like writers like the ones he's criticising. They're fun, and I don't care if these little stupid details aren't important to some great cohesive meaning.
