>read pic related out of curiosity
>get excited about trying out these methods
>anxiety prevents me from doing so
>order "Feeling Good" to overcome anxiety

Have I fallen into the endless cycle of self-help books?

Feeling Good is one of the good ones. Very solid insights. My concern of late with CBT is that it can point an accusing finger at the person who's already beating himself up, accusing him of fallacious thinking. Go easy on yourself OP but do examine the patterns in your thinking. Also Feeling Good is free from the self-serving agenda behind HTWF.

I've read this, and it seems quite a bit of his advice works in moderation. Society has changed in it's, "interactions" since then though.

Some people say it's "how to be a doormat for everyone", and they be right. However, he never tells you to NOT slight anyone does he?

Conjoin Carnegie's work with Greene's 9 laws of a complete sociopath in Power or Machiavelli, etc. You'll learn how to become "A doormat for everyone that will stab them in the back when it's turned".

I don't even swallow everything the above authors say.

Are there any books that could motivate you to get your shit together, to set long term life goals and to achieve the discipline needed to achieve them?

Marcus Aurelius, maybe some biographies about someone like Napoleon, Alexander the Great, etc.

You don't need motivation, but discipline.

Try reading the book all the time

I feel like Alexander wouldn't be that great of an example.

He pretty much got everything handed to him at birth and had to go from there
My life would probably look quite differently if I was born a king, taught by Aristotle and handed the most sophisticated army of my time

Someone on /lit/ recommended Andrew Roberts' Napoleon biography and I like history, so I'll go read that one

My post did mention discipline.

Do you know of any books that could help to get more disciplined or do you feel like that's something you can only achieve on your own?

I don't know any anon, sorry. I recommend stoic philosophy and picking up a craft.

But what if my thought patterns are not distorted?

What if I genuinely am a bad person? What if I genuinely have achieved nothing? What if I really am doomed?

What then?

I don't think accusing me of watching videos by someone you apparently know more about than I do is helpful.

Like my post made clear I haven't read any biography by Alexander yet, so my understanding of his life is obviously very limited.

I'm not saying he wasn't great and all, I just think that his life isn't a prime example that applies in this case and would be useful to study in the context I laid out

He was a great general, but you have to admit he at least got somewhat of a head start by being born as the son of a mighty ruler

I'm reading Feeling Good and I read that book (in the OP) a long time ago.

In my opinion, the most important thing with self-help strategies is just to start doing something consistently, so you'll be more cognizant of whatever mental process it is you're trying to change.

In other words, it's not really that fun to read, but it will be as useful as you make it. I think it'll help a lot with your social (?) anxiety.

I had really bad social anxiety ~1.5 years ago and I fixed it, so if you have questions about what worked I'll try to answer them.

That was me that recommended The Campaigns of Alexander and Roberts' Napoleon.

Both good reads, I enjoyed Napoleon's biography a bit more personally since I have a bit of knowledge from that period.

Campaigns did get me to start rereading the Aeneid again
