Is symmetry sexual in origin?

How does symmetry with a central point of interest factor in?
My guess is that the "third man" represents the Hermaphrodite, or a universal figure, maybe a sexless god.

In which case, why does the centre sometimes become identified with a fatherly king figure? Unless neither side is male, and the symmetry is derived from the singular body, and not from sexual dimorphism. In this case, the centre represents the phallus, not the hermaphrodite.
