Should I read this if I have poor social skills?

I'm not totally hopeless, but I'm quite shy, and I usually don't know how to initiate a conversation with someone I don't know very well.

Yes, but don't be religious about it.

Pretty much this. Just remember, OP, that the book was originally written for salesmen working in the field. Pick and choose what works for you, but don't go overboard.

It's pretty much a guide on how to be manipulative.

Read it, if only to identify persons attempting to use the techniques within on your person, so you can smack them upside the head for thinking you're some goon who can be suckered with eighty year old widely circulated parlour tricks.

My brother swears by this book so I might actually do this.

Nice cutting yourself short.

It's all fairly obvious stuff and I found myself already doing a lot of the things the books suggests.

For people who can't make friends I'm sure it's a wonderful book though. I would say that it's a book about showing appreciation and letting other people take space.

If things like this don't come together naturally, there's really no point to them.

It's like programming a robot to mimic loving you.

Talk about what other people are interested in.

Prod them to talk and listen.

There, now you don't have to read it.

I'm reading it... For me it is a oratory book disguised as self-help. Some "say what they want to hear" and so on.
